This month Arte Consultores presents “A mi la Lluvia,” a collection of photographic works by the prize-winning artist Juan Guillermo Escobar. The exhibit opens on Thursday, March 11 and runs through Thursday, April 15, 2010. Mounted within boxes that reflect light, this collection offers an alternative vision of the photographic medium, and requires the viewer to relate to the image for a longer period of time. Inspired by three concepts, this young internationally recognized Colombian talent has created a project that separates itself from the conventional perception of photography.

The first of these concepts refers to the idea of how one can add time to a photograph.  The images are not easily identified and require seconds more of the spectator’s attention, forcing the viewers to take their time while reading the elements of color, texture and information presented before them. The second alludes to the intention of separating the photograph from its descriptive elements, using it as a medium completely alien from its roots of visual reporting. Lastly, Escobar investigates the possibility of reconciling photography with painting by using pictorial elements that break the rigid dialogue between the two mediums.  The elements classically associated to painting, such as texture, abstraction, and color application, are found in these photographic images, as if the photo itself was created by acrylics and a brush, allowing the light and the elements in the photograph to appear less rigid and more abstract.

Among the awards presented to Juan Guillermo Escobar are included the honorable mention at the International Photography Awards in 2008 and 2009, as well as being a finalist and thus being published in the book Best Photography 2009 in the United States. In 2004 Escobar received the Deans Purchase Award from the Lowe Art Museum in Miami and in the previous year he was a national finalist in the United States for the Best of College Photography Annual 2003.

Most recently, his works have been exhibited at the Bogotá Pavilion of the Amsterdam Biennale in 2009, in Chapter 2 of the London-Photographic Association and at the Fashion Exhibit of Gallery 1839 in London in 2008, as well as at the PicassoMio Gallery in Madrid in 2007.

These 13 abstractions of light and color, each between 56 x 83 x 8.5 cm and 75.5 x 105 x 8.5 cm, show how these three concepts constantly interact among themselves and thus fuse into the visual result of “A mi la Lluvia.”
